The Juniper is an evergreen conifer plant that can be found in mountains and forests all over the world. Their leaves are needle like and turn scaly as the tree grows older and have a greenish blue and light green color and sometimes have a silvery tinge. The original Juniper bonsai is a natural hybrid species of Chinese Juniper. Since many Junipers can survive for 200 years or more, taking care of your Juniper Bonsai can give you an exquisite plant that will last for your whole lifetime (and of your grandchildren’s grandchildren!)

A  Bonsai Juniper is relatively easy to take care of as it is usually disease free. It thrives well in full sun but should be protected from the hottest of the midday sun. In colder climates you have to protect your bonsai from frost.

If you are planning to grow your Bonsai Juniper in your house, be sure to have the correct lighting. These trees also require somewhat of a humid environment so misting the plant can help.  Be careful when are watering the tree and make sure that you properly water until the soil is most, but do not leave standing water in the pot as this will cause root rot can kill these plants easily.

Like most trees, Junipers are appreciated from good fertilization and it is recommended that they be given a high nitrogen fertilizer every few weeks beginning in the spring and continuing through the middle of summer. From then on, feed them a low nitrogen fertilizer changing back and forth with an acidic fertilizer.

Bonsai trees in pots have to be repotted every few years until they are around 10 years old. It is best to change the pots in the spring, using a little larger pot. Make sure to use free draining soil that has clean grit or rocks so alkaline deposits are deterred from harming the Juniper.

Juniper Bonsai Shaping is what makes your tree unique and can be done with training wire and careful pinching of the foliage throughout the growing season. Make sure to utilize only your fingers to pinch and try to not use scissors or other tools which may cause the ends of the foliage to turn brown. Be sure not to pinch off all the needles or leaves as you will need enough foliage to protect the branches. Avoid trimming the first foliage that sprouts and be sure that you create a gradual pinching routine that leaves a reasonable sum of time between pinchings.

With the correct care, you should be able to admire and enjoy your Juniper Bonsai for a very long time and with many years to come.
