You see the maximum growth of your bonsai during summer. You should use late winter or early spring to prune and repot your tree but you can trim or prune it in summer too, especially those shoots that are growing too quickly. On deciduous trees the shoots must be cut to a pair of leaves.
Wire your bonsai during summer as it is correct time for this procedure. Shape your tree and train it, remove all the previous wire if your tree is already in shape.
Control the soil and when it is hot, water your bonsai daily, and even twice a day. You should fertilize your tree in summer as it needs much feeding then.
Autumn and winter slow down all the growing processes in bonsai trees. Do not prune your plant in autumn and give your tree rest in winter and remove all the wire from the trunk and branches of the tree. Do not water your tree much in winter.

Seasonal Care To Grow Healthy Bonsai
With the right care you can keep your bonsai tree healthy and beautiful all year round. Bonsai trees like traditional trees can bear great changes in their appearance during a year with the changing of the seasons. And your care must change too as the changing of the seasons requires.
Bonsai tree care in spring. Spring brings the first signs of growth in your bonsai tree and traditionally spring is the busiest time of the year for all gardeners including bonsai fans. And it is logical because after long dormant winter period the plants start their growing at springtime.
Some of deciduous bonsai trees need to be repotted in spring and you should prune their roots at springtime. If they were not repotted at their optimal time, during the late winter, the gardener has to do it at this time of the year. But you should remember that your bonsai trees must be repotted before the first buds break.
Springtime is also the ideal period for pruning as you can see every dead branch before the leaves hide them. New shoots must be cut then too. And springtime is the time for wires if you are rearing coniferous trees. You can also remove any unnecessary wires that can cut into the bark of the tree. If you apply fertilizer in spring, it can damage seriously the roots of the plant especially if the roots have recently been pruned, so never fertilize your bonsai during the spring.
In summer bonsai show their maximum growth. You should complete any repotting and pruning in late winter or early spring, but you should continue to prune and trim the shoots that are growing rapidly. The buds on coniferous trees must be plucked then they begin to swell; and the deciduous trees shoots must be cut to one or two pairs of leaves.
If you want to shape and train your deciduous tree, it is the right time to apply wire. And you can remove any previous wire if the trunk of the tree and its branches are in their desired position already.
Control the soil in the bonsai tray regularly and do not allow the soil dry completely. Water your bonsai daily in extremely hot weather and sometimes even more than once a day. It is the right time to feed your bonsai plants with fertilizer as most bonsai trees require feeding in summer.
Fall time leaves most bonsai trees bare during the winter and their process slow down. It is not the best time for pruning but in some cases you can continue pruning pines in autumn. Remove any wire and give your bonsai a rest during winter months. Bare trees need little water as they are entering a stage of dormancy. But conifers continue to need water but lesser than in hot summers. Somewhere around mid-autumn it is recommended to apply nitrogen-free fertilizer to your bonsai tree.
